This year, I overhauled my entire home/lab network, ditching proprietary, locked-down gear for open-source freedom! Goodbye, Ubiquiti Dream Machine and Unifi APs.

Hello, barebones x86 PC with Intel Core i7-8550U and 6 Intel Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, running pure FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE. Connects via PPP, handles traffic with pf firewall, and rocks an IPv6-first setup. Robust, reliable, and it "just works"!

It's powerful enough, that I can run some bhyve VMs and small application Jails alongside without an issue.

Finally migrated my Gateway to OPNsense (of course with IPv6!), running on a FreeBSD server in bhyve (with PCIe passthrough for the Intel NICs)

One interface (vtnet0) is bridged to a VM Switch on the BSD server, to route traffic to other VMs and Jails 🙂

Running smooooth and gives me so much more insight and options than the old Unifi hardware, I used before.

Also my WiFi (also new) is now absolutely amazing:

Migrated my Home-Assistant from the Raspberry PI 4 to a bhyve VM on my FreeBSD home-server ✅

Did configure acme.sh to get a Let's Encrypt certificate by using my public powerdns nameserver and the DNS-01 challenge ✅

Successfull implemented Passthru of my USB-controller to the Home-Assistant bhyve VM for ZigBee dongle ✅

Shut down and removed the old Raspberry PI ✅

I like it, when plans work out 🙂

I’ve heard that often in techie circles.

My own experience is a lot better than what’s usually rumored. I’ve tested quite a lot in the previous days and had pretty solid connectivity, both in cities (Mannheim/Frankfurt/Karlsruhe) as well as in really rural areas if southwest Germany (Pfälzer Wald/Odenwald)

Even during a cross-country high speed train ride (Mannheim, Frankfurt, Fulda, Erfurt, Leipzig, Berlin), I’ve had pretty decent network with just little problems (between Fulda and Erfurt, there’s room for improvement!)

But overall? I can absolute live with the level of connectivity. It’s not as bad as some people told me it would be. And they have rock solid native IPv6 😊

Seems the Debian uprade fom 12 (Bookworm) to 13 (Trixie) had some unexpected consequences, as the symlinks for /usr/bin/yarn , /usr/bin/yarnpkg and /usr/bin/pnpx were broken. But a quick removal of the defective symlinks plus a "corepack enable" did fix those shims again :-)

We had a production outage on our Mastodon instance burningboard.net:

Root-cause analysis:

At around 16:23 today, the Linux OOMKiller did terminate two processes: java (Elasticsearch) and a PostgreSQL checkpoint process.

The termination of the pg checkpointer did put the database in a weird state (all connection attempts just saying "the database system is shutting down").

Immediate resolve:

pg_ctlcluster 17 main stop -m immediate
systemctl restart postgresql

Actions taken:
- Added 4GB of additional swap-space to the system
- Upgraded PostgreSQL to Version 18.0
- Added memory-limits in the systemd overrides for Elasticsearch

Everything operational again 🙂
