Der Spruch ist nicht neu. Darum haben ein Freund und ich jeweils einen Nextcloud-Server aufgesetzt. Er verwendet einen Raspi mit einem Nextcloud Pi Image, ich verwende einen ausrangierten Klein-PC, auf dem ich manuell eine #LAMP Installation aufgebracht habe, dazu dann Nextcloud. Angeschlossen jeweils große rotierende Festplatten. Die Installation - zumindest bei mir - war nicht ganz trivial, aber inzwischen läuft es stabil. Wir stellen und gegenseitig Plattenkapazitäten zur Verfügung, um verschlüsselte "Außer-Haus-Backups" dort abzulegen. Dafür verwende ich #restic.
Erfahrung: Nachdem die Installation erst einmal lief - wie gesagt, nicht ganz trivial - laufen die Server stabil, und die Wartung hält sich in Grenzen. In erster Linie Updates einspielen, hin und wieder mal Wartung de

Heute zum Ostersonntag Vegane Waffeln gebacken 🧇

Rezept:

- 1/2 Würfel Hefe
- 200g Zucker
- 200ml Mandelmilch
- 400g Mehl Typ 405
- 200g Pflanzenfett (Margarine oder Öl, ich habe 50/50 genommen)
- 2 EL Vanillezucker
- 100ml Sprudelwasser
- 1 TL Salz

Alle Zutaten mit dem Handmixer glatt rühren, 30 Minuten ruhen lassen und dann im Waffeleisen goldbraun ausbacken.

I did completely get rid of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird on my personal systems now.

Firefox was my main browser for many years and I used it since Netscape transformed into OSS Firefox 20 years ago.

But the Mozilla foundation nowadays doesn't do a good job in maintaining the software. Bad political choices, focus on what I consider the wrong priorities and falling more and more behind on the techical details.

I moved to the Chromium based Vivaldi browser on all my systems. It's snappier, faster and way more reliable. Hardware acceleration does work out of the box under Linux and E-Mail is already built-in (although, I more often use KMail by KDE for that).

I'm highly satisfied with Vivaldi after using it for the past 6 months and never looked back.

Die überwiegende Reaktion bisher: Schweigen, Unverständnis, Entsetzen - als hätte ich verkündet, auf den Mond umzuziehen.
Ich bin gespannt, wie es weiter geht.

Software-Stack:

If anyone, using Fedora Linux 42, has issues with OBS-Studio and the Virtual-Camera mode:

That's because of an incompatibility between OBS-Studio 31.0 and the v4l2loopback Kernel module in version 0.14.0.

The fix for that is in obs 31.0.3, which is on the way from testing to stable right now. Should be offered as an RPM update within the next days.

Backups are only good as long as they work.

Spent this morning, restoring the backup of our Mastodon instance burningboard.net to a fresh virtual machine in Proxmox and did some validation that it is valid, complete, restorable and the disaster recovery documentation is up to date.

Everything worked perfectly ✅

Updated my router/home-server from FreeBSD 14.1 to 14.2 as well as all the jails and bhyve VMs running services on it.

Still waiting for poudiere to finish some builds for packages, I build locally. But apart from that, everything is done.

As usual, the upgrade was a smooth, uneventful experience without issues 🙂

On two ThinkPad/AMD Laptops with Broadcom WiFi adapter (ath11k_pci driver), I had serious issues with system hangs when WiFi was connecting and on resume from sleep (s2idle) in Fedora 42 with Linux kernel 6.14.2.

I Created a BugZilla entry and reported the issue to Fedora Bodhi. Several people reported the same issues there.

Now Linux 6.14.3 arrived in Fedora testing and resolved both issues :-) Now everything works without issues again!

Fedora Linux 42 KDE Edition on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen12.

3.6 - 5W of power draw in idle mode, due to the efficiency cores in the Intel Core Ultra 7 165U CPU.

This means 10-12 hours of usage with a fully loaded battery. Those numbers are amazing :-) My ThinkPad T14s Gen4 AMD can't get close to that (The 2.8K OLED display is pretty but rather power hungry)

I like my new travel companion so far :-) Just a little over 1kg, compact 14 inches and super portable 🙂

I use a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9 system as a cloud based development workstation.

The system is running on Proxmox VE and is running Apache Guacamole (https://guacamole.apache.org) as a clientless HTML5 remote access gateway.

I can simply access the system from any HTML5 capable web-browser and have my desktop with all the tools, I need to do some work.

(Of course, for security reasons, this is behind a strong MFA authentication)

Online on the road today with Fedora Linux and the Intel WWAN/4G card, built into my Thinkad T14s Gen4 AMD.

Setting up the Modem was easy and did work out of the box (No installation/driver required)

Even though, I'm using a budget provider (Aldi Talk Germany), the speed is absolutely suffiient. Reliably getting around 60 Mbps down and 25 Mbps in the upstream.

If you have a Notebook with an embedded WWAN device (GSM/LTE/5G) and want to quickly send a SMS message, there is a way to do this with mmcli (ModemManager CLI):

1st: List the available modem devices:

$ mmcli list

2nd: Sent the SMS via an available modem (in my case moden no. 0):

$ mmcli -m 0 --messaging-create-sms="text='Hello world',number='+1XXXXXXXXXX"

Messaging | created sms: /org/freedesktop/ModemManager1/SMS/7

3rd: Use the ID of the message and send it to the ether:

$ mmcli -m 0 --sms 7 --send
successfully sent the SMS

That's it. You can also read incoming SMS with mmcli by listing them with "mmcli -m 0 --messaging-list-sms" and then reading the invidual messages by their ID with "mmcli -m 0 --sms ID --send"
