Ich sehe das Problem nicht. Beides sind Klimaschädliche Subventionen und beide könnten jeweils alleine bereits problemlos das DE Ticket finanzieren 🤷🏻‍♂️

Und dann wären da noch die Pendlerpauschale für Autofahrer, die zu geringen Kosten für das parken am Straßenrand, das fehlen von Kerosinsteuer, mögliche KFZ Maut…

Es gäbe so viele Möglichkeiten, die Kosten des DE Ticket doppelt und dreifach einzusparen, wenn man aufhört, die Planeten-Überhitzung zu subventionieren.

Aber wir diskutieren ja lieber jedes Jahr erneut, ob das Deutschlandticket bleibt…

Es muss mehr Geld in die Bahn fließen und das wären low-hanging-fruits!

Der Spruch ist nicht neu. Darum haben ein Freund und ich jeweils einen Nextcloud-Server aufgesetzt. Er verwendet einen Raspi mit einem Nextcloud Pi Image, ich verwende einen ausrangierten Klein-PC, auf dem ich manuell eine #LAMP Installation aufgebracht habe, dazu dann Nextcloud. Angeschlossen jeweils große rotierende Festplatten. Die Installation - zumindest bei mir - war nicht ganz trivial, aber inzwischen läuft es stabil. Wir stellen und gegenseitig Plattenkapazitäten zur Verfügung, um verschlüsselte "Außer-Haus-Backups" dort abzulegen. Dafür verwende ich #restic.
Erfahrung: Nachdem die Installation erst einmal lief - wie gesagt, nicht ganz trivial - laufen die Server stabil, und die Wartung hält sich in Grenzen. In erster Linie Updates einspielen, hin und wieder mal Wartung de

Ich habe einen Restic-Backup-Konfigurator gebaut – die Einstellungen werden im Browser gespeichert.
Ihr könnt dort alles konfigurieren und braucht dann nur noch den fertigen Befehl zu kopieren.
Ist aber noch nicht ganz fertig; war ursprünglich hauptsächlich für mich privat gedacht, weil ich keine Lust hatte, die Befehle ständig raussuchen zu müssen.

Hi, bin #neuhier, gibt es was wichtiges zu beachten?

BahnCard 50 1st wieder mal ein Jahr verlängert. Auf ein weiteres Jahr mit möglichst entspannten und stressfreien Bahn Reisen.

Ich mache jetzt seit 2020 alle Dienstreisen und Privat-Reisen, bei denen das sinnvoll möglich ist, mit der Bahn und mein Fazit:

Joa, manchmal gibt es Komplikationen und ganz selten mal, geht etwas größeres schief. Aber ich würde nie wieder zum Auto zurück wollen. NIE.

Die Entschleunigung, die Tatsache, dass ich im Zug einfach arbeiten, abschalten oder sogar mal ein Schläfchen machen kann oder in der Bord-Gastronomie etwas essen, das ist für mich ein Game-Changer. Im Auto muss man immer hoch konzentriert sein, im Zug kann man leben.

Wegen #unplugtrump oder auch nur wegen gesteigertem Datenschutzbewusstsein richten sich immer mehr Leute ihre Cloud zu Hause ein, sei es per #Nas Server oder per #nextcloud . Eine feine Sache, man kann seine Fotos schon mal hochladen und hat Reise- und Notfalldokumente zur Hand. Problem dabei: In neueren Internetanschlüssen ist so ein Server nur über IPv6 erreichbar. Wenn man dann im Hotelzimmer nur IPv4 hat, und selbst das Mobilfunknetz IPv6 nicht kennt (habe ich gerade in meinem Italienurlaub erlebt), dann läuft nichts. Heute zum Ostersonntag Vegane Waffeln gebacken 🧇

Rezept:

- 1/2 Würfel Hefe
- 200g Zucker
- 200ml Mandelmilch
- 400g Mehl Typ 405
- 200g Pflanzenfett (Margarine oder Öl, ich habe 50/50 genommen)
- 2 EL Vanillezucker
- 100ml Sprudelwasser
- 1 TL Salz

Alle Zutaten mit dem Handmixer glatt rühren, 30 Minuten ruhen lassen und dann im Waffeleisen goldbraun ausbacken.

Sehr sehr lecker mit Ahornsirup 😋

I did completely get rid of Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird on my personal systems now.

Firefox was my main browser for many years and I used it since Netscape transformed into OSS Firefox 20 years ago.

But the Mozilla foundation nowadays doesn't do a good job in maintaining the software. Bad political choices, focus on what I consider the wrong priorities and falling more and more behind on the techical details.

I moved to the Chromium based Vivaldi browser on all my systems. It's snappier, faster and way more reliable. Hardware acceleration does work out of the box under Linux and E-Mail is already built-in (although, I more often use KMail by KDE for that).

I'm highly satisfied with Vivaldi after using it for the past 6 months and never looked back.

Früher war mein Leben autozentriert: tägliches Pendeln (2×25 Min) und 80–100 Tsd km/Jahr als IT-Berater.

Dann kam Covid – Homeoffice statt Autofahrten, kaum Geschäftsreisen. Die gewonnene Zeit und Flexibilität machten mich produktiver.

2023 habe ich gekündigt und bei Red Hat angefangen. Seitdem fahre ich fast nur noch Zug – und liebe es.

Im Auto muss man auf die Straße schauen, im Zug kann man arbeiten, lesen, schlafen, essen oder einfach die Welt vorbeiziehen lassen. Statt verlorener Zeit ist es nutzbare Zeit. Zurück ins alte Leben will ich nie wieder.

Hatte ein Angebot für ein #Wärmepumpe mit Pufferspeicher incl. Einbau. Wie erwartet ca.45.000€. Das war mir zu viel! Aber es gibt doch eine Förderung sagte der Installateur. Ich habe dann für uns nur eine Brauchwassserwärmepumpe mit neuem 300 LiterSpeicher in den Keller gestellt für 10.000 € , als erster Schritt. Also eine weitere Wärmepumpe etwas größer für die #Heizung bekomme ich für 15.000€ meinte der Monteur. Diese Art der Förderung ist doch eine Frechheit! Preise werden hoch gezogen und Leute werden abgeschreckt. Haus von 1930 dicke Wände Fußbodenheizung in Parterre , das zur Info.

Wenn mir das letztes Jahr einer vorhergesagt hätte, hätte ich ihn für einen Spinner gehalten.
Das ist irgendwie schon ein Staatsstreich. Da werden von einem Privatmann Behörden aufgelöst, Gelder eingefroren, die das Parlament bewilligt
hatte, und schon mal angekündigt, dass Gerichtsurteile ignoriert werden. Ein Paradies für Frau Weidel. Und was kommt als nächstes? Man könnte ja zum Beispiel die Daten deutscher Behörden, die bei US-Firmen liegen, in Geiselhaft nehmen. "Ihr bekommt erst wieder Zugriff, wenn ihr X und andere ohne Einschränkungen zulasst."
Wundern würde mich das nicht.

I wrote an Ansible connection-plugin to automate FreeBSD Jails via their host, by utilizing jls and jexec to run automation via a SSH connection to the FreeBSD host.

This enables seamless automation of FreeBSD jails without needing a SSH connection to the Jails themselves.

For ~7 Months now, my Git-Server (Forgejo) had an invalid A entry in the DNS.

The result was, that it was only reachable via IPv6 (The AAAA record was correct.)

The only two situations, where I noticed that, were on the WiFi of German railway (WifiOnIce) and two Hotel Wifi Networks. But that was easily solvable with a RoadWarrior VPN to get modern IP conenctivity.

My home-internet and my two mobile data plans, all have proper IPv6.

In the past, I had a pretty car-centric life. I commuted to work by car (2x 25 minutes per day) and, for my work as an IT consultant, I drove around 80,000-100,000 kilometers per year.

Then the pandemic came, and everything changed. I started working remotely, and business travel decreased to a minimum. I quickly got used to the additional free time and flexibility, and it made me substantially more productive.

In 2023, I quit my old job and got hired at Red Hat. Since then, I do almost all of my business travel by train, and I genuinely enjoy it.

The difference is profound. In a car, you need to be focused on the road. On a train, you can live—you can work, take a nap, eat something at the bistro, or just watch the world go by. In contrast to driving, it's not lost time; it's usable time.

I never, ever want to go back and am glad that my life nowadays is so much better without being dependent on a car.

There's moments, where I have to use a certain proprietary operating system from Redmond (be it because of customers requirements or loaner hardware etc.)

But this is now a magnitude less painful, since Fedora Linux 42 is now officially available as an official Linux distribution for the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) version 2 🥳

1. Installing WSL:
wsl.exe --install

2. Installing Fedora-42:
wsl.exe --install -d FedoraLinux-42

3. Setting Fedora as the default distribution for WSL:
wsl.exe --set-default FedoraLinux-42
wslconfig.exe /setdefault FedoraLinux-42

4. Running Fedora in Windows:
wsl.exe

Also works perfectly fine in combination with VSCode/VSCodium for Ansible development on Windows.

- Trackpad
- Thunderbolt Docking (including Audio and HDMI)

It's the perfect development and productvity machine

FreeBSD 14.3 got a greatly improved support for Intel WiFi hardware (iwlwifi driver).

Finally, the AX210 (802.11ac) wifi card in my ThinkPad T480 works perfectly fine without having to rely on the wifibox workarround anymore.

IPv4 works perfectly fine
IPv6 work perfectly fine
Standby and resume woks
Speeds are phenomenal

Also the WiFi configuration is rather easy:

Started building my entire infrastructure monitoring solution from scratch!

- Using Jails and seperation of duty:
- One Jail running Grafana and Prometheus
- One Jail running Netbird Wireguard to connect my infra securely
- One Jail running Nginx and Certbot

All ZFS based for backup / snapshots and rollback options.

Routed and NAT'ed via a seperate dedicated pf jail.

All working fine, I get first metrics and can start slowly improve from here.

Spent quite some hours with FreeBSD networking on my Home-Server, but now it all works!!! 🥳

- 6 Intel NICs (Some with tagged, some untagged networks)

- Bridges and virtual switches for Behyve VMs and Jails

- Trunk-Port to my Aruba AP with all VLANs for different SSIDs

- Full IPv6 support on all networks

- Firewall (via pf) and NAT for Legacy-IP

- PCI Passthrough of one NIC to a Behyve VM (with IOMMU/vt-d)

FreeBSD is just a network beast 🙂

We're running the Mastodon instance "burningboard.net" on a hardened FreeBSD/amd64 system (pf firewall, seperation in jails, zfs with snapshots every 15 minutes, offsite replication with zfs send etc.)

Since the initial setup of the new system is done and everything is running smoothly for more than 24 hours, I did now raise the kern.securelevel to 2 to lock the system down even further 🙂

I have a Lenovo T14s as my personal laptop, running Fedora Linux on it. I’ve never heard the fans, unless compiling larger chunks of software or when stressing the device with complex tasks like gaming.

Now I’ve got the same device model from one of my customers, but it’s running Windows 11. The fan is spinning *all the time* and constantly switching between annoyingly loud and insanely loud. Even when the system is just idling with just a chat application and one browser window open.

How can an operating system be such a resource hog and why thefuq is this so widely used?! My power meter socket shows almost triple the average draw that my personal device with Linux is consuming.

Tonight, I’ll probably dream about those constant fan noises *brrrrrr*

Magaged to get fully-automated deployment of FreeBSD VMs on Proxmox VE with cloud-init and static-ip configuration working after quite some troubleshooting.

- hostname, network config, ssh key, local user is all passed to the VM via cloud-init.

- Entire deployment of a FreeBSD VM takes less than 2 minutes until I can SSH in 🙂

KDE Plasma 6 on FreeBSD 14.3 on my Lenovo ThinkPad T480:

- Intel iGPU working via i915kms ✅
- Audio working out of the box ✅
- Intel AX210 WIFI via wifibox ✅

Power consumption is still worse than under Linux (3,5h vs. 5h+) but I'll try to optimize that further.

So far, I'm *very* satisfied with how well FreeBSD runs on the ThinkPad T480

Open source crypto-module done right. It’s already my 3rd one (I have already the big Nitrokey 3A and a Nitrokey HSM for my PKI)

The mini will be my backup key with its own GPG subkeys just to have redundancy plus I’ll add it as a second Passkey to several websites.

I removed IPv4 from two of my cloud-servers, since Hetzner charges extra for legacy and I don't need IPv4 on those (I access the servers and services with IPv6 and habe my RoadWarrior VPN for when I'm on outdated networks).

Now I noticed, that I can't update some Linux containers anymore, because the GitHub Container registry (ghcr.io) does not have IPv6 in 2025?! Seriousyl?? That's ridicoulous.

Sometimes, I miss certain aspects of the old internet 👴🏻:

- Usenet via NNTP (discussion threads in plain text)
- Chats on IRC (chat without bullshit)
- Simple websites that were about content and passion instead of monetarization, tracking and advertisement.

Meanwhile the modern net in 2025:
- Ads and intrusive tracking omnipresent
- Centralization, platform economy, gate keeping and entshittificatiion.
- Overregulation and legal pitfalls everywhere.

The Fediverse is a step into the right direction: Open protocol, decentralized and community driven, in a time where huge parts of the net are simply driven by corporate greed and governments that want to regulate everything.

Did some proper restore-tests of my offsite backups and restored them one after another into a local virtual machine (KVM) and verified that they decrypt, restore and boot correctly 🙂 (including our Mastodon instance burningboard.net)

It's good to have backups, but it's an even better feeling when you know, they work, restore correctly and the procedure has been tested.

All check marks green, next test in January 2026 🙂

Linux containers (OCI Containers) are ephemeral by design, except the volumes, you mount into them. In large scale environments, that can be useful (cattle vs pets argument). But that also introduces new challenges and makes it more complex to manage them.

For my personal environments, I like the approach of FreeBSD jails more. They are just a directory (or ZFS Dataset) with their own, persistent copy of the OS, easy to manage and the networking capabilities are flexible (bridged, vnet, they can be routed, firewalled, etc).

Jails are well aged, are around since FreeBSD 4 back in 2000, the non-ephemeral approach (and the absence of overlay file systems etc) makes them more feel like individual virtual servers than modern Linux containers but with extreme levels of flexibility.

Tools like jmore(8) (by @vermaden) and Bastille (Jails “Templates”) makes them even easier to manage.

Added GPG signing for my Git commits via the amazing oct-git (https://crates.io/crates/openpgp-card-tool-git) rust-implementation to my git configuration:

Beta version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (RHEL10) running inside of Podman with Distrobox on a Fedora Linux 41 system.

When you've installed subscription-manager on the base system (in this case Fedora) and activated the system, then the entire RHEL repositories can be used in the RHEL container (and not only the UBI part).

Great for testing software under the pre-release of next RHEL!

I'm extremely satisfied with the current state of #Fedora Linux.

#KDE Plasma 6.3 came super quickly after the upstream release and the Kernel 6.13 (which is still a pre-release version from Koji) made my AMD APU (AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U) a lot more stable and robust.

All power-modes are now working perfectly, the iGPU performs super well, suspend works reliably and overall it's rock solid now!

Hello, barebones x86 PC with Intel Core i7-8550U and 6 Intel Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, running pure FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE. Connects via PPP, handles traffic with pf firewall, and rocks an IPv6-first setup. Robust, reliable, and it "just works"!

It's powerful enough, that I can run some bhyve VMs and small application Jails alongside without an issue.

I just had a weird experience:

I was writing YAML code in VSCode when the text editor started to scroll randomly up and down. Both my hands were on the keyboard and not even close to my mouse.

After a moment, I found the culprit: My cat, who laying was on the desk, touched the Touchpad of the laptop (on a stand next to my monitor) with her paw, causing my editor to scroll randomly 😹
