Nach den ganzen herum-geeiere mit dem „Deutschland-Ticket“ und der ständigen Unsicherheit über dessen Kosten, der Finanzierung und der jetzt angekündigten Preiserhöhung sollte man vielleicht mal das ganze System neu denken.

Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel sind Daseinsvorsorge und unverzichtbar für die Verkehrswende. Gerade auch in der Klimakatastrophe.

Könnten wir das nicht so wie beim öffentlich rechtlichen Rundfunk machen? Den tatsächlichen finanziellen Bedarf berechnen und auf der Basis dann eine allgemeine Mobilitäts-Abgabe einführen? Natürlich mit entsprechender Befreiung für Menschen, die nur über wenig Einkommen verfügen.

Man könnte sich Fahrscheine und Kontrollen komplett sparen und das System wäre dem Gemeinwohl verpflichtet.

Mobilität ist Menschenrecht und wir brauchen eine echte Verkehrswende, keine Antriebswende.

Es scheint mir so, dass die Politik der letzten Jahre in Deutschland einen Teil der Leute nicht abholt und frustriert. Wir wissen, was nicht gut funktioniert: Soziale Kälte, Fremdenfeindlichkeit und das ignorieren der Klimakatastrophe mit allen Folgen.

Könnte man dann nicht mal etwas anderes ausprobieren? Vielleicht sozial, demokratisch, ökologisch und faktenbasiert? So mit Wissenschaft und ohne Hass? Konstruktiv an Verbesserungen arbeiten und dabei die schwächeren unterstützen, damit sie nicht noch weiter angehängt werden?

Ich fände, das wäre den Versuch absolut wert!

Wenn die Feuerwehr Klima leugner ist:

Mein Haus brennt.
Die erste Feuerwehr rückt an. Sie stehen vor dem brennenden Haus und schauen zu.
Auf Nachfrage erfahre ich das sie erst mit dem ḷöschen beginnen wenn andere auch löschen.

Ander Gruppen von Feuerwehr Leuten rücken an.
Einer wirft müll ins Feuer. Er meint :
"Die Entsorgung ist so billiger und ausserdem werfen die dahinten viel mehr in das Feuer". Beim umdrehen Stelle ich fest, stimmt. Das Argument, das dieses verhalten die Sache nur schlimmer macht, stösst auf taube Ohren.

Ein Makler taucht auf und versucht mir das Haus samt grundstück für einen Euro ab zu kaufen. Als ich verneine geht er zur Feuerwehr, diese beginnen darauf ab zu rücken. Auf Nachfrage wird mir gesagt: "ein Experte meine das dieses Haus nicht brenne". Ein anderer feuerwehmensch : "das Sachen brennen ist total natürlich"

I just had another IPv6 realization moment! I do this stuff for > 15 years and implemented v6 connectivity for multiple corporations but every now and then, there's a moment, where I realize the full potential of modern IP protocols.

I have my own provider independent (PI) IPv6 subnet from RIPE NCC. On my home network, I delegate individual /64 prefixes to each of my internal networks and use SLAAC on them.

I just realized, that I can actually target individual internal subnets in firewall rules in the cloud (like my admin-network, my guest-network or my iot-network) and I've got way more control in access-lists when there's no NAT involved that hides everything behind the same address.

This makes fine-grained access control list, that only allows parts of my internal networks way more powerful and flexible.

Technically, I know all of that and worked with that in corporate infrastructure. Never thought about that in a home-context. Mind->Blown.

Hat jemand Interesse an einem #Steam Key für #Deponia #Doomsday?

Ich habe den Key gewonnen und gerade festgestellt, dass ich das Spiel bereits über einen Freund in der Steam Family Library habe.

Ich war an einem Imbissstand an einem deutschen See. Dort gab es u.a. Pommes zu essen. Was mich jedoch überrascht hat, war der Allergen-Hinweis „Enthält Milchzucker/Laktose“.

Leider konnten mir die Verkäufer nicht weiter helfen und wusste auch nicht mehr, als dass das eben dort geschrieben steht. Es handle sich um ein TK Produkt und das wird so eingekauft und nur frittiert.

Hat irgendwer schon mal Pommes gesehen, die (aus welchem hirnverbranntem Grund auch immer) mit Milchprodukt verarbeitet wurden?

Das macht doch überhaupt keinen Sinn, Pommes sind geschnittene Kartoffeln, welche in Öl frittiert werden?! Da muss doch gar nichts weiter verarbeitet oder zugesetzt werden.

Ich hoffe mal, dass das eine falsche Deklaration war, denn Pommes waren für mich immer etwas, das ich als rein pflanzlich abgespeichert hatte. Und oft eine Notlösung, wenn es unterwegs mal sonst gar nichts anderes gab.

Heute: Vegane gefüllte Paprika mit Tomatensoße:

Die Füllung der Paprikaschoten besteht aus:

- 100g Couscous (Gequellt in 200ml mittelstarker Gemüsebrühe)
- 100g zerbröselter „Feta“ (pflanzlich) von bedda
- 1 Zwiebel (gewürfelt)
- 2 Zehen Knoblauch (gewürfelt)
- 2 EL Olivenöl
- 1 EL Basilikum (getrocknet)
- 1 EL Thymian (getrocknet)
- 1 TL Kreuzkümmel (Pulver)
- Prise Salz und Pfeffer (Schwarz)

Die Zutaten einfach mit dem gequellten Couscous vermengen und in die Paprika füllen.

Das ganze dann in eine Auflaufform mit Tomatensoße (Öl, Zwiebeln, Tomaten, Salz, Pfeffer und Zucker, nothing fancy) geben und bei 180 Grad für etwa 40 Minuten Ober-Unterhitze im Backofen backen.

Sehr leckeres und Schmackhaftes Rezept und Couscous ist eine tolle vegane Proteinquelle.

Ich war am Wochenende in #Berlin. Wenn man aus einer niedersächsischen Kleinstadt kommt, dann ist der #ÖPNV dort paradiesisch. Today I learned: Es gibt tatsächlich Menschen, die denken, dass Laktose-freie Sahne und Milch vegan sei.

Zitat: „Ich hab für den Kuchen extra die Milch ohne Laktose genommen, damit ihr den auch essen könnt“.

Und da war ich dann einen Moment sprachlos und hatte mühe, dass mir die Gesichtszüge nicht vollends entgleiten 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hier ist eine neue Heizung fällig und die Eigentümerversammlung hat sich tatsächlich für den Einbau einer neuen GAS-Zentralheizung entschieden. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤬😩

Auf der Eigentümer-Versammlung waren aber auch alle Klischees voll erfüllt: Man glaubt nicht daran, dass Gas zu teuer wird, die Politik wird uns schon nicht hängen lassen und überhaupt ist das mit dem Klimawandel alles nur grüne Panikmache.

Heute gibt es #Kaiserschmarrn in #Vegan

- 250g Weizenmehl (alternativ: Dinkel, wer es mag)
- 2 TL Backpulver
- 1 TL Natron
- 1 Prise Salz
- Messerspitze frische Vanille
- 50g Rohrohrzucker
- 350ml Sojadrink
- 40ml Rapsöl
- 1 TL Zitronensaft
- Paar Rosinen nach Wahl

Erst die trockenen Zutaten vermengen und dann die flüssigen dazugeben und alles zu einem honogenen Teig verrühren.

In einer (ofennfesten!) Pfanne mit etwas Alsan bei mittlerer Hitze anfangen auzubacken dann mit 2 Kochlöffeln in kleine Stückchen zerreißen, sobald der Teig gestockt ist.

Ich gebe dann nach 2-3 Minuten die ganze Pfanne in den vorgeheizten Backofen und lasse es dort fertig durchgaren.

Am Schluss noch mit Puderzucker bestäuben und voila. Kaiserschmarrn ganz ohne Ei oder Milch.

All the servers in my home-network, got publicly routed IPv6 addresses and incoming SSH is permitted on my Firewall/Gateway.

Since my mobile data-plan features modern networking, with IPv6, I can do any remote-access without any NAT via IPv6 now.

And in the rare case, I am on a network, that only supports a legacy IP protocol, I've built myself a road-warrior VPN on a Hetzner server, to get myself IPv6 connectivity in those situations.

My almost 6 year old ThinkPad T480 has a SIM card slot behind the battery. I never used that so far. This week, I grabbed a cheap prepaid SIM card from AldiTalk and tried it out.

Linux support was perfect. Right after login into my desktop, there was a dialog, prompting me for the PIN number. And after entering it, I was online.

I'm actually positively surprised how well it works and how fast mobile networks have become. I live in a very rural area of Germany in a small village and that LTE/4G modem still reliably gets up to 90 Mbps.

Also the O2 cellular network has native IPv6, which is absolutely great and I could reach all of my servers without a hassle.

First Fediverse toot in the #Vivaldi Browser on #Fedora Rawhide (Installed as an RPM package).

Works great and performance is significantly better on my (very old and dated) hardware.

Toggling a video between normal and full-screen took 2-3 seconds in Firefoix and LibreWolf and this latency is complately absent in Vivaldi. It's super snappy.

I think, I will try this on one computer for a while and see how it turns out.

Addons currently installed:

- uBlock Origin
- I still don't care about cookies (removes EU cookie nag banners)
- Plasma Integration

Experiment: For the remaining time of 2024, I did disable the IPv4 uplink from my home network. Only having public IPv6 addresses on my client devices (phones, laptops, SmartTV etc.). Let’s see how good (or bad) this will turn out. There is DNS64 and an external NAT64 gateway in place, in order to reach legacy destinations (all of my infrastructure is using native IPv6). So far, everything seems to work.

The #Vivaldi Browser was released in Version 7.0 today. Not entirely FOSS but it is so much better for me than the alternatives, that it ultimately replaced any other browser on my personal machines.

I was a long term Firefox user, but FF is soo slow on my (dated) hardware and the company of Mozilla did some decisions (Ads, Tracking, focus on questionable aspects) that I won't support it anymore.

LibreWolf was a decent project but it did break too often and is too heavily dependend on Mozilla's Firefox development in my opinion.

Vivaldi is running flawlessly on Fedora Linux 41 (Beta) with Wayland and KDE Plasma ! Great job and an awesome release @Vivaldi

I took some time to improve my #SSH #security a bit and store new private-keys inside the TPM 2.0 chip of my notebook using https://github.com/Foxboron/ssh-tpm-agent

Key generation:

Starting the Agent:
❯ ssh-tpm-agent -l /var/tmp/tpm.sock

Exporting the Socket:
❯ export SSH_AUTH_SOCK="/var/tmp/tpm.sock"

Using it:
❯ ssh user@host

Works well and I find the keys better protected than in the file-system. Will set it up as #systemd user service and keep it. Awesome experience.

Wow. My 6 year old Lenovo ThinkPad T480 got a new Firmware upgrade 1.52 today via fwupd. They actually published a new update after all that time 😯 Just a "fwupdmgr update" in Linux was enough to upgrade it.

I really like the Anbernic RG35XXH handheld. Such an amazing device for just 60 dollar.

Great form factor, super build quality and it runs all the retro games from my youth super well.

And it's basically just a small Linux computer with an Allwinner H700 ARM Cortex A53 SoC, so technically, it's Linux gaming

Currently running the custom firmware Knulli (Sorry, all Swedish speaking folks) that uses the BSP-Kernel from AllWinner which isn't fully open source.

But upstream Linux support for the Chip is something that currently is worked on, so someday, we might be able to run it fully on open source software.

Broken Sword was one of the first PC games, I ever completely played through on the PC.

That was in 1997 when the game was included in the German video game compilation "Gold Games vol. 2" The story was awesome and the game immediately got me.

Today, a remastered version of this gem with high-resolution graphics and some (much needed) rework was finally released.

Seeing my name in this games credits does feel special and awesome 🙂 Will definately play this remastered version soon.

Oh: The game ships with a native linux build as well. Not even Proton needed ❤️ Available on Steam and DRM free over on GOG

My main webserver is running FreeBSD and I've been running my services (nginx, postgresql, exim, etc) in individual jails. Each one with a ZFS dataset for it's data.

So far, I've been using traditional jails, but now, I did successfully implement VNET jails, to give each Jail it's own ip address and make them communicate via a private network, that I've been securing with pf firewall. Very smooth experience 🙂

Got myself an #Anbernic #RG35XX Linux based handheld from China. Mainly to play Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games from my childhood.

The build quality of the device did *really* surprise me. It's super hefty plastics, sturdy and has weight to it. Also the buttons are super comfortable and satisfying. It feels like I remember my real Gameboy from back in the day. Just with a (way) better display.

Definitely a pleasant surprise from a sub 50$ device from china.

I tested Gameboy, SNES, Gameboy-Advance, Playstation 1 and Dreamcast games on it and so far, it could run all games well. Under the hood, it's a Linux based system with Retroarch emulators.

Now I can't get the melody of Tetris out of my head again 🤣

Personal #Experiment:

I’m currently on vacation and did bring my #steamdeck as the only computer. Not just for gaming, but for all my computing needs.

Working on the deck in desktop mode with a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combination, was a decent experience. Checked servers, watched some video, did some emails, little coding. Absolutely no problem. Screen estate is definitely limited but for some light work, it was totally okay.

It’s absolutely awesome that Valve made such a versatile device. It’s a great gaming console but also a really great computer. And having less weight to carry is a big plus.

I’ll definitely leave my laptop at home more often and just rely on the deck in the future 😊

#mastoadmin If you run a Mastodon instance, you might want to take a look at pg_repack.

The #PostgreSQL database from an #Mastodon instance collects quite a lot of bloat, which is not removed with a normal VACUUM run and that *can* impact your performance over time. pg_repack can rebuild indexes online without downtime and solve that as well as shrink your database size considerably .

I did that today for burningboard.net and our Database shrunk by more than 3GB.

I use the awesome openpgp-card-ssh-agent (https://codeberg.org/openpgp-card/ssh-agent) from @hko to use physical OpenPGP Smartcards for SSH authentication.

Sometimes, I want to use my OpenPGP card while working on a remote system.

An incredibly useful feature for that is SSH forwarding in combination with the agents socket (sockets can be forwarded via SSH just like tcp ports):

Socket location on my workstation: /run/user/1000/openpgp-card/ssh-agent.sock

Socket location on the remote host: $HOME/.tmp/ssh-agent.sock

1. Connecting to the remote server and forwarding the socket:

2. Using the Socket on the remote system::

Short summary of the #regreSSHion vulnerability (CVE-2024-6387)

It's an unauthenticated remote code execution that works without user interaction. Therefore a rather high security risk for systems running #openssh.

Affected versions (AFAIK):

Any version older than 4.4p1 and 8.5p1 until 9.8. The first upstream version, containing a fix is 9.8p1. But since distributions often backport security fixes to older versions, a deeper look is necessary.

Finally upgraded my last machine (and my daily driver) to a #KDE #Plasma6 release distro.

#Fedora40 is a very great experience even in it's current pre-release state. Many thanks to all of the folks at Fedora for making this awesome distribution!

What was your #FirstComputer?

Mine was midi tower with a Cyrix Cx486DX4 (75Mhz), 8MB of memory, an S3 Trio 64v+ graphics card and a whopping 850MB hard drive. Display was a 14“ CRT that could only output up to 800x600 pixels. The operating system on it was Dos 6.x and I was a regular Norton Commander user.

Later that computer got upgraded by my brother to a Pentium MMX 166Mhz with 16MB ram and a 2,x GB hard drive with Windows 95, before I discovered Linux on a CDRom in a magazine and broke everything while trying to install it but not understanding the concept of partitions😅

Later that computer was running on dual boot with #Suse #linux and Windows 95 and I leaned C programming on the machine.

After many years of using the Lenovo T480 as my primary computer, I finally did upgrade to a newer system.

A Lenovo T14s Gen4 AMD with the following specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U
GPU: AMD Radeon 780M (Can play games surprisingly well!)
RAM: 32GB
SSD: 1 TB
Display: 2,8K 2880x1800 OLED
Network: WI-FI 6E and 4/5G Cellular

Of course running Fedora Linux with perfect compatibility out of the box.

I'm very satisfied with the performance and how well it can run even little bit demanding games with the iGPU (Baldurs Gate 3 at solid 45fps with FSR)

Just the keyboard is a disappointing downgrade to the T480 in my opinion. I miss the key-travel, the older ThinkPads had.

I'm quite using some #Haiku these days. That is an open source operating system (not based on #linux or #bsd) which is the spirital successor of the 1990s operating system #BeOS

A lot of great software runs absolutely flawlessly on Haiku and I can almost daily drive it for many of my tasks. Some of the window management features like multi-application tabbing or grouping are simply amazing :)

Reduced the data on our S3 Bucket for this Mastodon instance from 1,20TB to just 213GB!!.

We ran into a bug with the configuration and our S3 provider (Scaleway), which broke "tootctl media remove-orphans" bacause the data was in a subdirectory of the Bucket.

Thanks to a GitHub issue from @Purple, I was able to move the data to the correct location with "aws s3 sync" and remove the orphans afterwards. Freeing up a ton of space (and reducing the mothly bill significantly).

For a long time, I'm heavily utilizing RSS as the main way to organize my web content consumption (Blogs, Websites, News articles.) I use two different RSS readers (Alligator as a native application and FreshRSS as a web application).

Recently, I stumbled upon #Feedlynx. A super useful tool, to simply add any link into an RSS feed by just pressing a button in the Firefox browser. Like a universal "read later" function, that saves directly into my feeds.

After just 3 days of using Feedlynx, I already have more than 80 entries saved that way and it became an important part of my web (and youtube) consumption habits.

I run it as a rootless podman container, that is started upon login by a systemd user service. And the official Firefox add-on too add links into it.

POC: #RedHat Enterprise #Linux 9 Workstation running on #Proxmox VE with #xrdp and #Apache #Guacamole to access it internally (or via #wireguard VPN) via the Web Browser.

Running smoothly, fast enough and is a good self-hosted "cloud desktop" to do some work on on-the-go.

Initially only an experiment, but I'm really satisfied with the result and will keep it as a remote workstation 🙂

Awesome #linux tool, I install on all my machines nowadays: #btop++ . Like top/htop but a lot prettier and with a lot more detail:

- Battery percentage and power usage
- CPU usage total and per core
- Memory utilization
- Disk utilization and I/O
- Network throughput
- Process viewer with detailed infos and the ability to kill stuff
- GPU performance data (with certain devices)

Unfortunately doesn't support my integrated Intel GPU but everything else is absolutely fantastic.

The all new installer, Fedora Linux 41 introduces is awesome and fixes so many usability issues and makes the installation more clear and easier In my experience, is rock solid and stable. I really really like it!

Successfully migrated two CentOS Stream 8 (which is EOL since May 31) VPS to Alma Linux 8 today using the migration tool (https://wiki.almalinux.org/documentation/migration-guide.html#how-to-migrate) and then upgraded them to Alma EL9 using ELevate (https://almalinux.org/de/elevate/)

I would have considered CentOS Stream 9 but there doesn’t seem to be an easy or supported upgrade path from Stream 8 to 9 according to the documentation.

So far, I couldn’t see any problems and the systems are running perfectly fine. But I’ll keep the snapshots for at least 72 hours. Just in case as one is my mail server and a little critical for my family 😅

I‘m trying to get rid of #GitHub and migrated most of my personal stuff to #Codeberg, a non-profit collaboration platform, where I’m also a supporting member.

With my own code repositories, this was rather easy (except those, who are a fork of another GitHub repository, that wouldn’t make sense for the contribution processes).

The point, where I struggle is GitHub Gists. I regularly use those to share snippets, configuration files and other text fragments with people. An important aspect for me is that I can simply create a Gist from the Webbrowser, without the need of a git client.
As far as I know, there isn’t something similar in Codeberg.

Of course, I could use a Git repository with files (or my Jekyll based website) but that would require a git client and the nice thing about GitHub‘s Gist approach was the simplicity.

Does anyone have an idea on what I could use to replace Gists?

Love the auto-update feature of #podman !

Today, there was a new version of #forgejo and all I had to do in order to update it was a simply "podman auto-update":

My Forgejo instance runs on Podman on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and the container lifecycle is managed by quadlet, like explained here:

In order to use podman auto-update, all I needed to do was adding "AutoUpdate=registry" to the quadlet file /etc/containers/forgejo-server.container.
